Summary

Trial trenching at this location identified two large probable quarry pits and a ditch, none of which produced any dating evidence. An initial geophysical survey suggests that the pits were part of a fairly extensive area of quarrying.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F219).
This survey identified nothing of definite archaeological interest.
The most notable response is a large discrete patch of magnetic disturbance thought to potentially represent an area of former quarrying.
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F219; Trenches 560 and 561).
A trench positioned to coincide with part of the large amorphous anomaly identified by the preceding geophysical survey revealed a large probable quarry pit. Another possible quarry pit was also uncovered a little way to the north. A trench excavated to the east revealed a single north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch (running parallel to the adjacent extant field boundary). None of these features produced any dating evidence.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 September 2024.
