June 2024. Building Survey.
Photographic survey of outbuilding ahead of its proposed alteration and conversion to residential accommodation.
This building can be seen on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25-inch map (S1), but not the West Harling tithe map (S2), suggesting it was constructed at some time in the latter half of the 19th century. It was one of a number of outbuildings present to the west of the farmhouse at end of the 19th century, the rest of which were subsequently demolished. It is shown on (S1) to have been open on its southern side and wider than its present form, with the loss of the northern part of its roof explaining its current asymmetrical form. The slightly later Ordnance Survey Second Edition 25-inch map (S3) shows an open-sided structure adjoining the southern side of this building – all of which suggests a probable use for livestock – most likely cattle. The once open southern side of the building had been closed using clay lump walling.
Most, if not all, of the internal roof structures appear to be relatively recent.
See report (S1) for further details.
