Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2015 revealed little of potential archaeological interest. Although two probable ditches were recorded these both correspond with 19th-century boundaries. Subsequent trial trenching had similarly negative results, with the post-medieval ditches identified by the geophysical survey and a natural feature the only remains uncovered.

Map

March-April 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified no anomalies of definite or likely archaeological significance.
Although a pair of north-west to south-east and north-north-east to south-south-east aligned linear anomalies were recorded these both correspond with the former boundaries of a plantation shown on the Barwick tithe map (S1). A cluster of short linear anomalies are of uncertain origin could represent archaeologically-significant remains, although their irregular nature makes this unlikely. A series of other anomalies in this area are possibly associated with tree hollows. The was no evidence for archaeological remains in the vicinity of the angle in the parish boundary.
See report (S2) for further details.

May 2015. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential impact of proposed development.
Attention is drawn to the presently unexplained angle of the Bagthorpe with Barmer/Barwick parish boundary where it passes through the northernmost part of the site. It is suggested this could have been the location of some earlier historic landscape feature, such as a Bronze Age barrow.
See report (S3) for further details.

September 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The six trenches excavated revealed little of archaeological interest, with only two ditches and a natural feature recorded. These ditches had been identified by the preceding geophysical survey and both correspond with 19th-century plantation boundaries. Neither produced any finds. None of the other geophysical anomalies investigated were found to have associated sub-surface remains.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
