Map

February-October 2014. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of wind turbines and associated infrastructure.
The initial excavation of a California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test pit at c. TF 8167 3482 revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. This pit was though relatively shallow and did not reach the base of the subsoil deposit present.
Service trenches excavated adjacent to the track running between Barwick Hall Farm and the site entrance revealed nothing of archaeological interest. It should though be noted that neither trench reached the base of the subsoil layer.
Various works at the south-eastern end of the site also revealed no archaeological remains, including the construction of a new roadway, the stripping of the footprint of the site compound and the excavation of an infiltration pit. The majority of these groundworks were also insufficiently deep to reach the base of the subsoil layer, with only the infiltration pit exposing the underlying geological deposits.
The one unstratified find of note was a sherd of possible Roman pottery recovered from the topsoil in the area of the site compound. The metal objects recovered were all modern.
Information from draft report.
