Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017/2018 identified a small rectilinear enclosure and part of an associated trackway. This trackway continued into the field to the west (NHER 65924), where it was associated with another rectilinear enclosure. The remains are also visible as cropmarks on aerial images, along with number of various other related linear features that were not associated with corresponding geophysical anomalies (see NHER 22903). A single trial trench excavated to the north of these remains in 2020/2021 revealed a ditch and two pits, none of which produced any dating evidence.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area 61).
This survey identified a group of linear anomalies in the south-west corner of the site that are likely to represent a small rectilinear enclosure. This enclosure lies immediately to the south of a pair of east-to-west aligned linear anomalies that probably represent ditches that bounded a trackway. This trackway continued into the field to the west (NHER 65924), where it was associated with another rectilinear enclosure. Both the trackway and the enclosure in this field correspond with cropmark recorded by an initial aerial imagery assessment (see NHER 22903). This work and a subsequent mapping project also recorded a number of additional linear cropmarks to the north of the trackway in this field, although the geophysical survey identified no evidence for surviving remains associated with these features.
A cluster of discrete anomalies within the small enclosure potentially represent pit-type features but there are no other potentially archaeologically-significant discrete features across the remainder of the field. A number of scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are thought to be of probable natural, geological origin.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F168; Trench 124).
A single trench excavated at the northern end of the site revealed a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch and two pits, all of which were undated.
The larger of the two pits was a sub-circular feature with a dark, charcoal-rich fill and evidence for in situ burning. Finds were limited to two fragment of burnt flint and a sample from its fill produced a significant amount of charcoal (predominantly oak), but nothing else in the way of plant macrofossils or other debris. Although recorded as a fire pit it appears to have been similar to features seen elsewhere that are now thought to represent the traces of small-scale charcoal production. Similar pits were also recorded in several of the fields to the east of this site.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
