Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017/2018 identified ditches associated with a probable trackway and an adjacent rectilinear enclosure. It is clear from cropmarks recorded at this location (NHER 22903) that these features form part of a more extensive group that continues into the field to the east (where elements were also identified by geophysical survey – see NHER 65923). Although a subsequent phase of targeted trial trenching in 2020/2021 saw the investigation of both the trackway and the enclosure at this location the features uncovered produced little in the way of dating evidence, finds being largely limited to two small prehistoric pottery sherds.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area 60).
This survey identified a pair of adjacent, parallel, east-to-west aligned linear anomalies likely to represent trackway ditches. A group of parallel and perpendicular linear anomalies immediately to the north of this trackway appear to form what was presumably a contemporary rectilinear enclosure. The trackway was seen to continue into the field to the east (NHER 65923), where it was associated with at least one other rectilinear enclosure. A north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly that potentially represents an earlier boundary ditch was recorded to the south of the trackway and could be seen to continue into the field to the west (NHER 65928).
The trackway and the eastern side of the enclosure are also visible as cropmarks on aerial images of this location, along with a number of similarly aligned linear features that are not associated with geophysical anomalies (see NHER 22903).
A cluster of discrete anomalies recorded in the vicinity of the enclosure in this field potentially represent pit-type features but none of the discrete responses across the remainder of the site are regarded as potentially archaeologically significant. A number of scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are thought to be of probable natural, geological origin.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F169; Trenches 125-130).
A total of six trenches were excavated at this location, the majority in the vicinity of the probable trackway and associated enclosure identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
Features recorded included east-to-west aligned ditches associated with the trackway (both recut on at least one occasion) and a north-to-south aligned ditch that represented the eastern side of the probable enclosure. Finds were limited to two small sherds of potentially Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery and a single flint flake, all of which came from a sample taken from the fill of one of the trackway ditches. A number of other, similarly-aligned and presumably broadly contemporary ditches all produced no finds and a single pit recorded within the interior of the enclosure was also undated.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 September 2024.
