Full Description
October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (F58).
An extensive area of magnetic disturbance in the south-west corner of the field corresponds with the known site of a post-medieval brickworks (NHER 23276).
Other responses of note include two north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomalies likely to represent infilled ditches. A short perpendicular anomaly extends westwards from the southern end of the eastern ditch and a similarly aligned linear anomaly was identified close to the western feature. All potentially represent elements of the same field system.
A small number of the discrete anomalies recorded are regarded as being of undermined origin and therefore potentially of archaeological interest. The majority are though thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. A number of scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (F171 and F172; Trenches 136 and 137).
Two trenches were excavated at this location, the westernmost of which coincided with the site of the post-medieval brickworks (NHER 23276). This revealed part of the large quarry that can be seen on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1), the fills of which contained a range of late post-medieval to modern objects.
The second trench was placed to coincide with the easternmost of the extensive north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey. This revealed a corresponding ditch but unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. The anomaly that appeared to represent a ditch extending westwards from the southern end of this feature was found to coincide with a large pit - which appeared to be cut through a dump of charcoal-rich material. Although no dating evidence was recovered it is likely these remains were associated with the nearby brickworks.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
