Full Description
October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F81).
This survey identified little of potentially archaeological interest.
The one response of note is an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear anomaly close the southern edge of the site. This corresponds with a previously recorded cropmark, which is part of an extensive group of undated but potentially Late Iron Age to Roman features recorded as NHER 67066. There was though no evidence for surviving remains associated with the numerous other cropmarks now mapped at this location.
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F127; Trenches 110-112 and 428).
A total of four trenches were excavated at this location, all of which were positioned to target cropmarks that are part of an extensive group of undated but potentially Late Iron Age to Roman remains recorded as NHER 67066. Despite the negative results of the preceding geophysical survey the majority of the cropmarks investigated were actually found to be associated with surviving ditches. These included several of the more extensive north-west to south-east aligned cropmarks and a single perpendicular, north-east to south-west aligned feature, although unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered from the corresponding ditches. A ditch associated with a west-north-west to east-south-east aligned cropmark was also recorded, the fill of which contained an iron horseshoe of medieval or later date.
A small number of additional ditches without corresponding cropmarks were also recorded, along with a single pit. These all produced no dating evidence.
Unstratified finds recovered at this location included a medieval pottery sherd and a post-medieval wall tile.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
