Summary

A geophysical survey of this site and subsequent trial trenching in 2020/2021 identified a group of field boundary ditches and several adjacent probable quarry pits. Although these features produced no dating evidence one of the ditches corresponds with a former field boundary shown on a 19th-century tithe map and it is likely that the other remains were of a broadly similar date.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F140).
This survey identified a group of three north-to-south and east-to-west aligned linear anomalies. One corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Blickling tithe map and it is probable that the two adjacent features were of a broadly similar date – most likely representing lost elements of the same field system. Areas of magnetic enhancement adjacent to one of these probable ditches may represent former quarry pits.
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F140; Trenches 475-481).
All three of the linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey were investigated, although only two corresponding ditches were identified. Neither feature produced any dating evidence.
One of the large patches of magnetic disturbance was shown (as expected) to correspond with a large probable quarry pit, which also produced no finds.
The only other features recorded were two undated linear features in the southern half of the site that both terminated within the trenches in which they were exposed.
A small number of unstratified finds were recovered at this location, including a single post-medieval pottery sherd and undatable tile and drain pipe fragments.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 September 2024.
