Civil Parish HEYWOOD, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

February 2022. Metal-detecting. [1].
Late Saxon pieced silver dirham of an uncertain ruler and mint. This coin had been pierced in two places, and then broken in at least three places. Modified dirhams such as this are often associated with Viking activity, with their fragmentary state indicating use as hack-silver or bullion (due to the purity of their silver compared to that of the coins minted in England at this time).
Information from PAS import.
This pierced coin was submitted for consideration as Treasure (Ref: 2022 T308).
P. Watkins (HES), 23 February 2025.
