Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017/2018 identified nothing of potential archaeological interest. Subsequent trial trenching in 2020/2021 did however reveal two ditches and a pit. One of the ditches contained several handmade pottery sherds of probable Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age date.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F112).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a group of discrete cropmarks and a single linear cropmark mapped at the eastern end of this site (all part of a group of probable medieval to post-medieval remains recorded as NHER 39003). It should be noted that this survey also failed to identify any trace of several former field boundaries shown on 19th-century maps.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 October 2024.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F074; Trenches 67 and 539).
The easternmost of the two trenches excavated revealed a undated pit and an adjacent east-to-west aligned ditch that produced three sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery.
The western trench exposed an undated north-west to south-east aligned ditch.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 October 2024.
