Summary

Geophysical surveys of this site in 2020/2021 and 2024 identified a number of linear anomalies, at least two of which are likely to represent infilled field boundary ditches. Limited trial trenching in 2020/2021 uncovered a ditch associated with one of these anomalies but no finds were recovered.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F082).
The only response of note was a north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly. No corresponding boundaries can be seen on the available 19th-century and later maps.
A number of scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are likely to represent ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris). The remaining discrete anomalies are all of probable geological origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 October 2024.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F082; Trench 241).
The single trench excavated uncovered a north-east to south-west aligned ditch that clearly corresponded with the previously identified geophysical anomaly. No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 October 2024.

October 2024. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site (Field 2).
This survey of the entire site identified a number of linear anomalies, including the north-east to south-west aligned ditch recorded by the earlier work. Additional responses of potential archaeological interest include a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomaly close to the western edge of the site that is also likely to represent a former field boundary ditch. The alignment of this feature suggests it was probably associated with either the late post-medieval field system or an earlier but related system of land division.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 June 2026.
