May 2018. Test Pitting and Metal-detecting.
Fieldwork undertaken as part of Heritage Lottery Funded (HLF) Imagined Land Project saw the excavation of a single test pit in the rear garden of Friar’s Acre on Friar’s Lane (TP 3). A metal-detecting survey of the garden was undertaken at the same time.

The test pit revealed layers of modern make-up associated with the construction of the current house, which sealed a deep layer of waterlogged colluvial silty subsoil. Auger testing revealed the presence of a dense yellowish silty clay at a depth of c.1.57 below the ground surface.
Finds recovered included:
1 undatable pieces of iron slag, 2 burnt flints, 1 fragment of fired clay, 13 pieces of animal bone, 4 oyster shells and 3 cockle shells.
1 Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blade segment.
1 Late Neolithic/Bronze Age ?retouched flint flake, 2 flakes and 2 chips.
1 ?medieval brick fragment.
1 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherd.

The metal-detecting survey recovered only a post-medieval thimble.
