NHER 68683 (Monument record) - Medieval and post-medieval features

March-May 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new residential dwelling.
The various foundation and services trenches excavated revealed a silty sand natural deposit at a depth of c.0.40m below present ground level. This was cut by several pits, two of which contained medieval pottery. A possible north-east to south-west linear feature was also recorded, the fill of which contained small fragments of reddish scorched clay and a single medieval pottery sherd. A broad, shallow pit or naturally-formed hollow was also noted in the south-east corner of the building footprint. This was overlain by a deposit containing medieval pottery. The small pottery assemblage recovered from these features is dominated by Grimston products of high to late medieval date (including a second/waster sherd).
One pit also contained a fragment of medieval brick and pieces of post-medieval brick and tile.
A residual Roman pottery sherd was found in one of the medieval features and a second was recovered from the overlying subsoil.
The subsoil layer was truncated by three pits of relatedly recent date, one of which contained late post-medieval material and another what was clearly modern debris. These were presumably associated with the construction and subsequent occupation of the nearby dwellings on Station Road.
