Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2016 revealed the remains of a late post-medieval red brick building and a brick-lined well of a similar age. Dumps of red brick rubble within the subsoil layer probably represented demolition debris from this and/or the other post-medieval structures that had previously stood near this site - potentially including several that had been associated with the adjacent mill (NHER 26548).

Map

2003. Borehole Survey and Test Pitting.
Geotechnical survey of proposed development site.
This survey suggested that ground conditions were variable, with the two window samples drilled within the bounds of the site encountering between 0.6m and 1.6m of 'made ground'. A test pit dug at the eastern edge of the site located a brick structure similar to a well lining that extended to a depth of at least 3.2m.
Results summarised in report (S1).

February 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The five trenches excavated revealed remains of exclusively late post-medieval to modern date. These included a brick-built well in the north-east corner of the site with a brick-built cap (the top of which lay only approximately 0.1m below the present ground level. The fill of this structure was not excavated. Red brick foundation exposed in the north-west corner of the site were almost certainly associated with a pair of cottages visible at this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). A modern post-hole was the only other feature recorded.
There was evidence for extensive modern disturbance, with dumps of red brick fragments observed within the subsoil and at the interface between this layer and the natural geological deposits.
No finds were recovered during this work.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 November 2024.
