Full Description
4 March 1996. Watching Brief.
Excavation of post-holes for erection of a new fence along the southern edge of the path leading to the southeastern corner of Burgh Castle Roman Fort (NHER 10471) was monitored intermittently.
Structural remains were observed at the base of one pair of post-holes, which were dug to 0.7m below the ground surface. The post-holes were spaced 0.8m apart. The westernmost post-hole revealed the top of a bonded brick wall. The eastern post-hole of the pair exposed a deposit of compact clay containing large charcoal flecks. These features have been interpreted as the remains of a building and floor. No objects were recovered, but based on its location within the area of the Roman Vicus (NHER 49204) at Burch Castle (NHER 10471) it may be of Roman date.
No similar material was observed in any of the other post-holes. It is notable that none of the post-holes exposed natural deposits, indicating a significant depth of overburden at this location.
See unpublished report (S3) for further details.
These remains were previously recorded under NHER 10486.
