Summary

Possible enclosures, boundaries and drainage features, of medieval to post medieval date, are visible as earthworks on 1940s and later aerial photographs. More recent aerial photographs from 2022 and visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018, show that while some features survive, others appear to have been levelled or even destroyed by subsequent development on parts of the site.

Map

January 2025. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
Possible enclosures, boundaries and drainage features, of post medieval or possibly medieval to post medieval date, are visible as earthworks on 1940s and later aerial photographs (S1-S2). The precise date and function of the mapped features is not certain. Some appear to be fairly recent and are depicted on historical maps, such as the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S3), and some may be drainage ditches of low archaeological significance. Other elements, however, could relate to earlier settlement or agricultural activity. More recent aerial photographs (such as S4, taken in 2022) and visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018 (S5), show that while some features survive, others appear to have been levelled or even destroyed by subsequent development on parts of the site.
