Full Description
September 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed extension to residential home.
A sequence of clayey silt riverine deposits were encountered at the base of the single trench excavated, one of which contained a small quantity of late medieval/early post-medieval pottery. A number of features of probable post-medieval date truncated these deposits, including a north-west to south-east aligned gully, a later east-to-west aligned ditch and a sequence of three intercutting pits. Although many of these features contained medieval brick and tile fragments the earliest of these also contained pieces of post-medieval ceramic building material. It is possible that this material resulted from the demolition of a nearby building that had incorporated a mix of medieval and post-medieval building material. One of the pits also contained clay tobacco pipe bowls of 17th- to 19th-century date, while the most recent feature in the sequence contained a complete wooden plank. This final pit and the ditch were truncated by a brick-lined drain of probable 18th- or 19th-century date. These remains were sealed by a sequence of late post-medieval or modern demolition layers, the uppermost of which lay immediately below the topsoil.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
