Summary

Trial trenching revealed a cluster of probable tree hollows and several ditches. These features produced few finds, although the material that was recovered suggested most were probable associated with relatively recent, post-medieval or modern activity. A single medieval pottery sherd found was most likely residual.

Map

December 2024. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Features uncovered by the three trenches excavated included a cluster of small pits or tree hollow, one of which contained a single medieval pottery sherd while two others produced single probable post-medieval tile fragments and pieces of undiagnostic iron slag. Coke was also recovered from one of these features suggesting they were unlikely to have been of great antiquity.
The easternmost trenches exposed three undated ditches and a pit or linear feature terminus. Samples taken from two of the ditches produced a small number of carbonised cereal grains (including free-threshing wheat and barley) and a number of seeds. One was also found to contain a small amount of coal and clinker, along with a single piece of spheroidal hammerscale from iron working. A piece of clinker was also recovered from
No unstratified finds were recovered.
