Summary

Trial trenching in 2020 identified a group of undated linear features at the eastern end of this site, close to where a cluster of ring-ditches, enclosures and other linear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (NHER 18243). Two ring-ditches were encountered, which were mostly likely drainage ditches around post-medieval stack stands. The other ditches were probably of a similar age, although the possibly of an earlier date can't be discounted.

Map

June-July 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
These trenches revealed a cluster of undated linear features on an area of higher ground at eastern end of the site, including two ring-ditches and a number of other ditches and gullies. No finds were recovered from any of these features. It is thought that the ring-ditches had probably been drainage ditches around post-medieval haystacks stands and the other ditches were most likely of a similar age, although the possibility of an earlier date can't be discounted.
It is likely these remains were associated with a cluster of ring-ditches, enclosures and other linear features visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (recorded as NHER 18243).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
