Map

November 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The eight trenches excavated revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with all of the features exposed likely to have been associated with post-medieval to modern gravel extraction. These included a large pit in the central part of the site that contained several fragments of post-medieval ceramic building material. Two much larger infilled quarries were also partially exposed, the southernmost of which corresponds with a gravel pit shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). The second potentially represents a later, 20th-century quarry.
Unstratified finds were limited to a small assemblage of metal objects, comprising a medieval coin, a medieval strap clasp and an iron possible medieval hammerhead.
See report (S2) for further details.
