Full Description
June 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site in grounds of former factory.
The five trenches excavated revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only two linear features and a modern pit uncovered. The former included a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch which produced a single fragment of medieval brick. The second linear feature was an undated, narrow, north-east to south-west aligned gully or truncated ditch. The pit contained a relatively recent pig burial, along with modern pottery and ceramic building material.
During the work a World War Two surface air raid shelter was noted on the site. This had yellow brick walls and a flat roof of reinforced concrete. It is described as having lain "…in a patch of trees opposite the main entrance…". It was presumably demolished during the subsequent redevelopment of the site.
See report (S1) for further details.
