Summary

In 2013 topsoil stripping along the route of a new sewer pipeline exposed two modern pits and a linear arrangement of natural features that potentially represented the remnants of a hedgeline. It should be noted that overburden was only fully removed in small areas, with the surviving soils elsewhere potentially masking any other remains present.

Map

October-December 2013. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new sewer pipeline (Field A).
The working easement was stripped to a depth of 0.55-0.65m, revealing a cluster of discrete features at c. TG 1094 0279. These comprised two pits that both contained animal bones and modern ceramic building material (not retained) and a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear arrangement of what appeared to be natural features (potentially the remnants of a hedgeline). Two machine-excavated test holes demonstrated that elsewhere in this field the surviving overburden was between 0.40m and 0.20m deep. Neither revealed anything of archaeological interest.
At this location the pipe itself was installed using directional drilling, so there was no open-cut pipe trench to monitor.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.225).
