Summary

Several pits and a number of possible pits were identified at this location during the installation of a new sewer pipeline in 2013. One feature was clearly a relatively recent rubbish pit but the others were all undated. It should be noted that these remains were recorded in far from ideal conditions during the excavation of the pipe trench itself. Overburden was also not fully removed during the initial strip of the working easement, with the surviving subsoil layer potentially masking any additional remains present.

Map

October-December 2013. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new sewer pipeline (Fields B and C).
The working easement was stripped of topsoil to a depth of 0.37-0.60m. Two test holes excavated by machine in the western part of the site demonstrated that the surviving subsoil was between 0.20m and 0.32m deep. Neither revealed archaeologically-significant remains. An area towards the eastern end of the site was subject to further stripping due to the presence of what appeared to be potentially archaeologically-significant remains cutting the subsoil. These were subsequently found to be shallow patches of disturbed ground. A number of features were though noted during the subsequent excavation of the pipe trench itself. These included three pits, 13 possible pits and a probable natural feature. One of these features was clearly a relatively recent rubbish pit, being found to contain a range of late post-medieval to modern pottery, along with post-medieval glass bottles and and rusted iron objects. A dark layer containing red brick was also noted close to the north-western end of the site, close to a disused aviary behind a market garden at the end of the track.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.225).
