Map

October-December 2013. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new sewer pipeline (Field F).
The working easement was stripped of topsoil to a depth of c.0.40m, with three machine-dug test holes demonstrating that the surviving subsoil was between 0.18m and 0.30m deep. One of these test holes revealed the edge of a large feature and a number of additional large pits were revealed during the subsequent excavation of the pipe trench itself. These were almost certainly quarry pits of relatively recent date – being backfilled with material that contained various objects of post-medieval to modern date. An early 20th-century date for these workings is demonstrated by the available cartographic evidence. A large gravel quarry is marked immediately to the south of this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1), with subsequent editions showing that these workings to have expanded considerably during the early 20th century.
A small number of unstratified finds were recovered at this location, including a medieval buckle, a medieval/post-medieval suspension ring and a 19th-century coin.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.225).
