Full Description
August 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Much of the area examined was shown to coincide with a large former quarry pit - this feature being encountered within all three of the trenches excavated. The edge of another quarry pit was also seen in the southernmost trench. Various modern finds were seen in the fill of the larger quarry pit, suggesting that its final infilling at least had occurred in the later 20th century. Its original age is though less certain. The Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1) shows a quarry pit on the other side of the site's western boundary (which originally formed part of the Burnham Market/Burnham Sutton parish boundary), but nothing is shown within the site itself on this or any of the subsequent Ordnance Survey maps consulted.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 May 2025.
