Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2023 uncovered a number of ditches. One corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on a 19th-century and it is likely that most, if not all, of the other features were also of relatively recent date.

Map

April 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The six trenches excavated revealed a number of ditches, most of which were probably of relatively recent date. The most substantial feature was a west-north-west to east-south-east aligned ditch close to the southern boundary of the site that appears to relate to a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). The majority of the other linear features were aligned either west-north-west to east-south-east or north-north-east to south-south-west, suggesting they were most likely also post-medieval in date. This suggestion is supported by the small number of finds recovered, which included a piece of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe, a brown glass bottle and a quarry tile or brick paver.
A north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditch at the eastern of the site is recorded as having produced a fragment of brick, but unfortunately no date is suggested for this find.
See report (S2) for further details.
