Full Description
June 2012. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The five trenches excavated revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only three linear features recorded. These included a north-to-south aligned ditch that contained fragments of late medieval or post-medieval brick and animal bone. This is thought to have been a post-medieval field boundary ditch and an adjacent, narrower but similarly-aligned linear feature to the west was potentially of the same age. The third linear feature was deemed to be of probable natural origin.
A large of amount of brick rubble and other modern debris encountered in north-west corner of the site corresponds with the site of a former pond shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1).
Natural chalky clay deposits lay directly beneath the topsoil. No unstratified finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
