Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2024 recorded little of obvious archaeological interest. Although a number of linear anomalies were identified, the majority correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps and others were probably earlier elements of this late post-medieval field system. There was evidence for fairly extensive modern disturbance in the southern half of the site.

Map

August 2024. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified little of obvious archaeological interest. Although a series of north-to-south and east-to-west aligned linear anomalies were recorded, the majority correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1) and it is likely that most of the others represent earlier elements of the same field system. The one possible exception is a short north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomaly close to the western edge of site.
A north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly in the south-west part of the site represents an underground power cable.
Extensive areas of magnetic disturbance in the southern half of the site are the result of relatively recent activity – considerable disturbance being visible on aerial imagery from 1999.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
