Summary

A watching brief maintained during the erection of a new lychgate at this location in 2018 recorded the possible remnants of a boundary bank but little else in the way of archaeologically-significant remains. The absence of evidence for burials suggests the adjacent cemetery is unlikely to have ever extended into this area.

Map

April 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new lychgate.
Two reasonably substantial foundation trenches were excavated for the sleeper walls of the new structure, both of which reached natural geological deposits. No archaeologically-significant features were observed, the only deposit of note being a mid brown silty sand deposit seen in both trenches that potentially represented the remnants of a boundary bank associated with the adjacent churchyard.
The lack of topsoil suggested this area had seen at least a degree of truncation during the construction of the adjacent carpark.
No finds were recovered during this work.
See report (S1) for further details.
