Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2024 revealed little in the way of significant remains. Although two perpendicular ditches were recorded these both corresponded with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps. Other, similarly-aligned linear features thought to represent plough scars and the remnants of a hedge were almost certainly of a similar age.

Map

April 2024. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The four trenches excavated revealed a number of linear features, including a north-to-south aligned ditch and an adjacent parallel feature throught to represent the remnants of a hedge. Although these produced no finds they clearly corresponded with a former field boundary depicted on the Downham Market Tithe map (S1). A feature exposed at the southern end of another trench can be seen to coincide with a perpendicular former boundary shown on the same map. A number of closely-spaced probable plough scars were also noted, all of which were similarly aligned to the late post-medieval ditches.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
