Full Description
April 2024. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The four trenches excavated revealed a number of linear features, including a north-to-south aligned ditch and an adjacent parallel feature throught to represent the remnants of a hedge. Although these produced no finds they clearly corresponded with a former field boundary depicted on the Downham Market Tithe map (S1). A feature exposed at the southern end of another trench can be seen to coincide with a perpendicular former boundary shown on the same map. A number of closely-spaced probable plough scars were also noted, all of which were similarly aligned to the late post-medieval ditches.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 September 2025.
