June 2025. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of small extension on east side of Abbey Cottage (NHER 30919).
The foundation trench for this extension was sufficiently deep to reach the natural geological deposits, which were overlain by a subsoil layer of varying thickness. The uppermost soil deposits were heavily disturbed and the area was truncated by a number of modern drains.
The one feature of note recorded was a pit that contained medieval pottery (suggestive of a 13th-century date) and an oyster shell.
A small assemblage of unstratified finds was recovered from the subsoil layer during this work, including medieval, post-medieval and late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds; a possible medieval roof tile fragment; single post-medieval brick and pantile fragments; a post-medieval clay tobacco pipe bowl fragment; animal bones and oyster shells. It is noted that the medieval pottery includes a number of large, unabraded sherds that had presumably been disturbed from underlying contexts.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2025.125).
