Full Description
Site of Rose Cottages – a pair of cottages shown on the Castle Acre Tithe map of 1840 (S1).
December 2013 and October 2016. Photographic Survey.
Survey of Rose Cottages ahead of their proposed demolition.
This pair of cottages are built of brick and have an asymmetrical pantile roof. They were probably built in the early 19th century to house agricultural workers. They were originally a pair of simply dwellings with gable end stacks that each consisted of one room on the ground floor, one of the first floor and a rear outshut. The cottages were extended in 1915, with a second room added to the ground and first floors of both. Originally a pair of simple ‘one up one down’ dwelling as a pair of dwelling. As part of these works the original fireplaces were replaced and the stacks remodelled. A further renovation in around 1950 saw the additions rear extensions. The cottages had originally been served by a row of privies and coal sheds located against the roadside wall to the north, little of which remained. No original internal features had survived these two phases of renovation.
See report (S2) for further details, including floor plans. See also digital photo archive (S3).
