Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2016 identified little of definite archaeological interest. Linear anomalies at the southern end of the field were potentially associated with a group of cropmarks previously noted on aerial photographs of this location (NHER 52458), but were regarded as most likely geological in origin. Although the cropmarks had been tentatively interpreted as possibly representing a Neolithic mortuary enclosure or long barrow it was noted that their nature is very uncertain and they are not necessarily archaeological. The only other response of note was a linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on 19th-century maps. A subsequent watching brief maintained during the excavation of a directional drilling pit at the southern end of the site in 2017 recorded no archaeologically-significant remains.

Map

February 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline (Field 11).
This survey revealed nothing of definite archaeological interest.
The more notable responses included an east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear anomaly at TG 2804 0466 that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Framingham Pigot tithe map (S1).
A group of north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies at the southern end potentially relate to a group of linear cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location and tentatively interpreted as a possible Neolithic mortuary enclosure or long barrow (NHER 52458). These geophysical anomalies are though thought to be most likely geological in origin and it was noted when the cropmarks were first recorded that their nature is very uncertain and that they are not necessarily archaeological.
A dipolar linear anomaly crossing the central part of the site marks the line of a modern service.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

January-February 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of directional drill pit at southern end of site during installation of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline (Site 4).
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were observed and no finds recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 January 2026.
