Summary

A geophysical survey of a strip along the eastern edge of this field in 2016 recorded little of archaeological interest, the only response of note being a linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on a late 19th-century map. A subsequent trial trenching evaluation of a strip along the western edge of the field in 2017 revealed only a second undated ditch. Neither phase of work revealed any evidence for the Early Saxon cremation cemetery thought to exist at or close to this location (NHER 31192).

Map

February 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline (Field 17).
This survey of a strip along the eastern edge of the field revealed little of potential archaeological interest, the only response of note being a north-west to south-east aligned linear anomaly at TG 2824 0283 that corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S1).
Various dipolar responses were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface, most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 January 2026.

January-February 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of location on proposed route of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline (Site 2).
The five trenches excavated were placed along the western edge of the field, to the west of the area examined by the preceding geophysical survey (the proposed route of the scheme having been shifted as much as possible to avoid Early Saxon cemetery NHER 31192). Archaeologically-significant remains were limited to a single east-to-west aligned ditch. No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 January 2026.
