Summary

A watching brief maintained during limited groundworks at this location between 2022 and 2023 recorded a dark layer containing Late Saxon pottery and thought to relate to occupation at this time. The only feature identified was a pit that produced no dating evidence but was potentially associated with the Late Saxon phase of activity. Map

June 2022-March 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new dwelling.
The excavation of foundation trenches and a soakaway exposed natural geological deposits, which were overlain by a dark grey brown silty sand deposit that contained Late Saxon pottery and potentially related to the occupation of the site during this period. Fragments of animal bone and an oyster shell were also recorded form this layer.
The only feature recorded was an undated pit observed in the north-west corner of the house foundation trenches. This was overlain by dark brown layer interpreted as a subsoil.
Other unstratified finds recovered during these works including additional Late Saxon pottery sherds, a small number of medieval, post-medieval and late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, post-medieval bottle glass, a post-medieval folding knife and several undatable iron nails.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2024.38).
