Summary

Between 2007 and 2008 a number of objects were recovered from mixed loads of dredged aggregates that included material from East Coast Dredging Region Licence Area 251. These poorly-located finds include a potentially Palaeolithic animal bone; an unidentified iron object of possible post-medieval date and a ship's badge that probably represented the World War Two era badge of the Destroyer HMS Cavendish.

This record details poorly-located objects recovered as a result of off-shore dredging that were potentially derived from Aggregates Extraction Licence Area 251. These discoveries were reported to English Heritage/Historic England through the Marine Aggregate Industry Protocol for Reporting Finds of Archaeological Interest. See (S1) and (S2) for further information on the Protocol and NHER 59946 for details of objects definitely recovered within Licence Area 251.

April 2007. Off-shore Dredging.
Found at Northfleet Wharf amongst a mixed load comprising material dredged from this location and Licence Area 102 (Humber Region):
1 ?Palaeolithic animal bone. Tentatively identified as the radius from a hippopotamus.
1 ?post-medieval unidentified iron object. Elongated, blade-shaped object, possibly from an agricultural tool such as a plough.
See Discovery Reports (S3) and (S4) and reporting protocol annual report (S5) for further details. These discoveries were also featured in the Autumn 2007 issue of the Protocol's newsletter (S6).

Pre 10 November 2008. Off-shore Dredging.
Found at Dover Wharf amongst aggregate from various sources, but most likely from either this location or Licence Area 451 (South Coast Region):
1 World War Two ship's badge bearing the name 'Cavendish'. Its size suggests it was the wartime badge of HMS Cavendish - a Destroyer. The nature of the find suggest it was more likely to have come from Licence Area 451, which is situated to the east of the Isle of White. It was potentially discarded as part of the modernisation of HMS Cavendish in 1955 (making a south coast provenance the more likely).
See Discovery Report (S7) and reporting protocol annual report (S8) for further details. Discovery reports awaited. The badge was featured in the Spring 2009 issue of the protocol's newsletter (S9). It was reported in the Autumn 2009 newsletter (S10) that a second Cavendish badge has also now been found, which appear to have a much more secure south coast provenance.
