Full Description
April 2008-June 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of new soke dykes as part of the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 11).
The movement of plant during these works revealed the partial outline of a rectangular structure with an internal division (Site 3). Although the walls themselves were not exposed their position was shown by the compaction of the surrounding material. These were almost certainly the remains of a building shown at this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). A number of buildings are also marked at this location on the Acle tithe map of 1838 (S2) and this was probably one of two shown as occupied dwellings (although they are depicted in a very schematic fashion). This building was demolished at some time between 1946 and 1988.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 1 December 2025.
