Summary

A watching brief maintained during flood defence works at this location between 2008 and 2010 recorded two brick structures likely to represent small bridges of late post-medieval date – one crossing a drainage outlet running from Acle Marsh Farm Drainage Mill (NHER 8612) and the other a drainage dyke running parallel to the river. The former is now enclosed by a new flood bank but the latter was unaffected by the works.

Map

April 2008-June 2010. Watching Brief.
Two brick structures were noted at this location during works undertaken as part of the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 11).
The first was a c.3.8m section of wall at TG 4223 1035 (Site 4), at the point where a path can be seen crossing a drainage outlet on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). It is therefore likely that this wall had been part of a bridge that carried the path over this watercourse. The outlet had been previously infilled and the wall is now enclosed within a new flood bank.
The second brick structure was noted at TG 4225 1033 (Site 5) and represented the remains of a dyke crossing shown on (S1). This structure was obscured by undergrowth but an examination of its underside identified two phases of brickwork, indicating it had potentially been rebuilt on at least one occasion. It was not disturbed by the groundworks.
See report (S2) for further details.
