Full Description
April 2008-June 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of new soke dyke as part of the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 11).
No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded at this location and no finds recovered.
There was no evidence for surviving remains associated with a north-east to south-west aligned ditch or channel visible as earthworks on aerial photographs at TG 4993 0902 (Site 21; part of an extensive group of potentially medieval to post-medieval remains recorded as NHER 42417).
There was also no evidence for surviving remains associated with an area of possible post-medieval ridge and furrow visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the field to the west (Site 19; NHER 42160).
The scheme was resigned to ensure the site of a 19th-century steam-powered drainage mill immediately to the west of this location (Site 20; NHER 42910) was not affected by these works. Instead of a new dyke being excavated close to its location an existing dyke was slightly widened and a pipe connection made to the new channel.
See report (S1) for further details.
