Summary

A dispersed group of fragmentary linear cropmarks likely to represent former field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs of this area. A number correspond with former boundaries shown on 19th-century maps but others may represent elements of earlier field system.

Map

June 2017. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
Assessment of aerial imagery along proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
Former field system, boundaries and ditches (Site 27).
Many correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Reepham title map (S1) and Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 December 2025.

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This survey identified linear anomalies that correspond with several of the cropmarks in this group – all of which are features that coincide with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps.
See NHERs 64157 and 65944-65946 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2025.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This phase of work saw the investigation of several of the cropmarks in this group, with a number of corresponding ditches identified. These included north-north-east to south-south-west aligned features at TG 1158 2384 that coincide with former field boundaries shown on (S1). The 'U'-shaped arrangement of cropmarks mapped at TG 1066 2400, were also shown to be shown to be associated with surviving ditches, although one clearly corresponds with a north-west to south-east aligned former field boundary on (S2) and it is likely that the two perpendicular features were earlier elements of the same post-medieval field system.
The investigation of two north-north-east to south-south-west aligned cropmarks at TG 1139 2385 revealed no corresponding remains.
See NHERs 65944-65946 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2025.

November 2021-March 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
This survey demonstrated that a west-north-west to east-south-east aligned linear cropmark at TG 1120 2376 is likely the northern side of a rectilinear enclosure.
See NHER 65945 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 March 2026.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
This phase of work saw the investigation of two sides of the probable rectilinear enclosure associated with the west-north-west to east-south-east aligned cropmark at TG 1120 2376. Early Iron Age pottery was recovered from the corresponding ditches.
See NHER 65945 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 24 March 2026.
