Full Description
October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Areas F48 and F49).
This survey identified four linear anomalies, three of which are north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east aligned responses that correspond with former field boundaries shown on the Reepham tithe map (S1) and Salle tithe map (S2). One of these linear anomalies also corresponds with a cropmark noted on aerial photographs of this location (part of a group of fragmentary probable field boundary ditches recorded as NHER 69642). There was though no evidence for surviving remains associated with two perpendicular linear cropmarks mapped to the north of this feature.
The fourth linear anomaly recorded was aligned north-to-south and potentially represented an earlier boundary.
An area of magnetic disturbance at TG 1054 2383 is thought to potentially represent an area of former quarrying. The majority of the remaining discrete anomalies are regarded as natural in origin.
Extensive magnetic disturbance at the western end of the field and scattered dipolar responses were probable caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface - most likely modern debris.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F195; Trenches 148 and 430-431).
The three trenches excavated at this location revealed two north-west to south-east aligned ditches, both of which correspond with a former field boundary shown on (S1). This feature had been identified by the preceding geophysical survey and also corresponds with a linear cropmark previously mapped at this location (part of the group recorded as NHER 69642). A perpendicular ditch in an adjacent trench corresponds with one of two north-east to south-west aligned cropmarks that had also been mapped at this location. A single fragment of post-Roman tile was recovered from this feature. The three cropmarks had given the appearance of forming a small rectangular enclosure but it has now been shown that the feature forming its southern 'side' actually coincides with a much more extensive late post-medieval field boundary. Although the perpendicular features don't appear on the available 19th-century maps they were most likely earlier elements of the same field system.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
