Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/201 recorded a pair of perpendicular linear anomalies likely to represent field boundary ditches. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2020/2021 revealed a ditch associated with one of these anomalies and an adjacent pit - both of which produced single sherds of medieval pottery.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Areas 197 and 198).
The most notable responses were two linear anomalies in the western field, one aligned north-west to south-east and the other north-east to south-west. Although the orientation of these probable former field boundaries suggests a relationship with the extant field system, no corresponding features are shown on the available 19th-century maps.
Although various discrete patches of magnetic enhancement were also recorded these are also thought to be of natural origin.
Scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close the surface, most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F198; Trench 254).
The single trench excavated at this location was placed to coincide with a north-west to south-east aligned anomaly identified by the preceding geophysical survey. A corresponding ditch was identified that contained single Roman and medieval pottery sherds, a piece of fired clay and a prehistoric flint flake. A pit was also recorded, which produced another medieval pottery sherd.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single fragment of undiagnostic post-Roman ceramic building material.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2025.
