Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 identified a number of linear anomalies likely to represent former field boundary ditches. One corresponds with a former boundary shown on 19th-century maps but the others were potentially earlier in date – particularly as the investigation of one in an adjacent field (NHER 65947) saw medieval pottery recovered from the associated ditch. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2020/2021 only saw the excavation of the feature shown to be associated with a late post-medieval field boundary.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area 199).
This survey identified several linear responses, including a north-east to south-west aligned anomaly at the eastern edge of the field and an adjoining perpendicular anomaly that was traced into the field to the east (NHER 65947). Although the orientations of these probable field boundary ditches suggests a relationship with the extant field system no corresponding features are shown on the available 19th-century maps. A north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomaly recorded at the western end of the site does though coincide with a former field boundary depicted on the Reepham tithe map (S1).
Although various discrete patches of magnetic enhancement were also recorded these are also thought to be of natural origin.
Scattered dipolar anomalies and an area of magnetic disturbance at the western end of the site were probably caused by ferrous material on or close the surface, most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F198; Trench 254).
The single trench excavated at this location was placed to coincide with the westernmost of the linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey – which can be seen to coincide with a former field boundary shown on (S1). A corresponding ditch was encountered but no dating evidence recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
