Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 revealed no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. Subsequent limited trial trenching revealed an undated ditch and a large probable extraction pit. The latter also produced no finds but was most likely post-medieval in date, lying close to the site of a large 'sand pit' depicted on a late 19th-century map.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area 202).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
Although various discrete patches of magnetic enhancement were recorded, these are all thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology.
Areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar anomalies were all probably caused by ferrous material on or close the surface, most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2025.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F202; Trench 256).
The single trench excavated at this location revealed a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned ditch and a large probable extraction pit, neither of which produced any dating evidence. A large 'sand pit' is though marked to the south-east on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1), suggesting the pit was most likely associated with post-medieval quarrying.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2025.
