Full Description
May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F204).
This survey identified three linear responses likely to represent infilled ditches. These consisted of an east-to-west aligned anomaly with two perpendicular north-to-south aligned anomalies extending to the north. No corresponding boundaries are shown on the available 19th- and 20th maps, suggesting these features likely represent elements of an earlier field system.
An area of magnetic disturbance at the southern edge of the site represents disturbance associated with a former quarry pit immediately to the south. Areas of magnetic disturbance at TG 0958 2384 and TG 0962 2388 also likely represent areas of quarrying.
The remaining discrete anomalies are all thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology.
Although various discrete patches of magnetic enhancement were recorded these are all thought to be the result of variation in the underlying geology.
Areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close the surface, most likely modern debris.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F204; Trenches 257 and 258).
The two trenches excavated this location were placed to target potentially archaeologically-significant remains identified by the preceding geophysical survey. One of the trenches encountered an undated east-to-west aligned ditch that corresponded with one of the linear anomalies but there was no evidence for features associated with the two perpendicular, north-to-south aligned anomalies to the north. One of the large discrete anomalies was also investigated and – as expected – found to be associated with a large probable extraction pit. This also produced no finds.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
