Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2020/2021 revealed several large discrete anomalies likely to represent former quarry pits, close to an extensive area of magnetic disturbance associated with a quarry shown on a late 19th-century map. Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2020/2021 demonstrated that one of these anomalies was indeed associated with a large probable extraction pit. An undated ditch was also recorded.

Map

May 2020-January 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F206).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
An extensive area of magnetic disturbance at TG 0920 2375 is associated with a large former quarry pit shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1). Several large discrete anomalies to the north-east of this feature are thought to also represent former extraction pits.
Numerous much smaller areas of magnetic enhancement are all thought to result from variations in the underlying geology. Several fragmentary and sinuous linear anomalies in the southernmost part of the site are also probably natural in origin.
Scattered dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface, most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F206; Trenches 260 and 261).
One of the two trenches excavated at the location was positioned to target a large discrete geophysical anomalies though to represent a former quarry pit. This interpretation was confirmed, with a large probable extraction pit encountered. Finds were though limited to a single small Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery sherd and several prehistoric worked flints – all of which were most likely residual. The second trench revealed a north-east to south-west aligned ditch. This produced no dating evidence, although its orientation suggests it was most likely post-medieval.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 December 2025.
