Summary

A geophysical survey at this location in 2022/2023 identified at a probable small enclosure and a number of pit-like anomalies at the western edge of the site, adjacent to Tungate Road. These potentially represent remains associated with some form of medieval or later roadside activity, although they are less dense than the responses at nearby sites thought to represent areas of former settlement (see for example NHER 69647 to the north). Other linear responses were primarily associated with the field system that can be seen on 19th-century maps. A small number do though potentially represent ditches related to at least one earlier system of land division, including one probable boundary ditch that appears to have a small adjoining enclosure. Other response of potential interest include a circular anomaly the may represent a small ring-ditch, although this was only just visible above the magnetic background and regarded as being of uncertain origin.

Map

October 2022-February 2023. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large potential development site (Area 4).
This survey identified a group of linear anomalies at the western edge of the site (TG 2696 2955; adjacent to Tungate Road) that appear to represent at least one small enclosure. A number of pit-like discrete anomalies are also present in this part of the site. These responses potentially represent remains associated with some form of medieval or later roadside activity.
Various linear anomalies are present across the remainder of the site, including a number of adjoining east-to-west and north-to-south responses that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the North Walsham tithe map (S1). A number of other, similarly-aligned linear anomalies in the south-west corner of the site clearly represent previously lost elements of this field system. A small number of linear response potentially represent earlier ditches, including a north-west to south-east aligned anomaly crossing the site at TG 2727 2973. An adjoining 'L'-shaped anomaly potentially represent a contemporary small enclosure. A number of other roughly north-west to south-east aligned linear anomalies are also present, although these weak responses are regarded as being of uncertain origin. Also of possible interest is a circular anomaly at TG 2704 2958 that may represent a ring-ditch, although this is only just visible against the magnetic background. The majority of the discrete anomalies recorded across the site are also regarded as being of uncertain origin.
Areas of magnetic disturbance at the margins of the field and scattered dipolar 'spikes' were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris. A north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear dipolar trend crossing the eastern part of the site is incorrectly referred to as a former field boundary – it is a continuation of a modern service that had been observed in the field to the north (NHER 69648).
