Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2017/2018 recorded two linear anomalies that potentially represented infilled ditches, one of which extended the line of a linear cropmark visible on aerial images (part of a group of potentially medieval to post-medieval boundary ditches recorded as NHER 65610). A single trench excavated at this location in 2020/2021 recorded no archaeologically-significant remains, although it should be noted that this was placed within the gap between the two linear geophysical anomalies.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F73b).
The most notable response is a north-to-south aligned linear anomaly in the central part of the site, which appears to continue the line of a short linear cropmark visible on aerial images of this location (part of a group of possible medieval to post-medieval boundary ditches recorded as NHER 65610). It is potentially related to a perpendicular, east-to-west aligned cropmark that extends eastwards from its southern end, although no corresponding feature was identified by the geophysical survey.
A short north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomaly recorded at the northern edge of the site potentially represented another infilled ditch.
The other linear anomalies recorded are all thought to be agricultural in origin, including a north-west to south-east aligned response that corresponds with another of the cropmarks recorded at this location.
Although numerous discrete anomalies were recorded these are all thought to be the results of variations in the underlying geology. Discrete dipolar anomalies and areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the field were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F146; Trench 491).
The single trench excavated at this location was placed between the two linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey (neither of which continued into the actual scheme corridor). No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded and no finds recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
