Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2018 identified a single linear anomaly that coincides with a cropmark visible on aerial images of this location (one of two similarly-aligned features recorded as NHER 65394). Subsequent limited trial trenching in 2020/2021 uncovered a corresponding ditch but unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. Several other undated ditches and possible pits were also recorded.

Map

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F72).
The one response of note is a north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly in the central part of the site that corresponds with a similarly-aligned cropmark visible on aerial images of this location (one of a pair of undated possible boundary ditches recorded as NHER 65394).
Although numerous discrete anomalies were recorded these are all thought to be the result of variations in the underlying geology. Discrete dipolar anomalies and areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the field were probably caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms (Area F148; Trenches 495-498).
One of the four trenches excavated was placed to coincide with the linear anomaly identified by the preceding geophysical survey. This revealed a corresponding north-east to south-west aligned ditch but unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. A number of other undated features were also uncovered, including a north-to-south aligned ditch, a large possible extraction pit and a number of elongated pits or ditch termini. Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 23 December 2025.
